Architects and designers Marcelo Valdes, Pamela Vazquez, and Jon Monson will again offer a series of lectures and tours of several exquisite and architecturally relevant homes in the Lake Minnetonka region, most of which you will find in Bette Hammel's popular book, "Legendary Homes of Lake Minnetonka". Each session will begin with a lecture about the home and its architecture, and be followed by an expertly guided tour. Don't miss this opportunity to tour inside some of the region's most beautiful private homes which are otherwise not open to the public. Space is limited, register early. Try a few hours in our sculpture studio and get a taste for working with metal. This mini-course will introduce you to a few basic metal working techniques such as welding and forging, and some of the tools and equipment in our sculpture studio. Encaustic Painting: Working With Wax [WORKSHOP]

In this exciting, one-day experience you will learn beginning encaustic techniques. A brief history and description of encaustic painting will be discussed as well as basic supplies and tools, safety, preparation of supports including application of grounds, fusing techniques and paint application. An overview of a variety of techniques will be demonstrated such as wax image transfers, mixing your own paint, creating texture and working with masks and stencils. Watercolor Landscapes: 2 1/2 Techniques [WORKSHOP]
Instructors: Suzanne Galloway and Georgia Kandiko
Skill Level: AB, I, AD
This class will be taught as a two-day workshop by two experienced and fun watercolor instructors. Each day will be a different method of painting a watercolor landscape and each method will be demonstrated by the instructors. Day 1 will focus on painting birch trees using masking fluid and creating a light filled background; Day 2 will focus on painting the wet-into-wet technique with wiping out details. For those students who paint quickly, there will be an additional method demonstrated of painting rocks and trees “outside the margins.” An optional critique will end each day. Bring your regular watercolor supplies and a bag lunch. Request a supply list when you register. Enrollment limited to 20; ages 18 and up

Creating Your Best Work [WORKSHOP]

You are invited to join your peers in a group critique session led by Michon Weeks. The purpose of the critique is to help each participant create his/her best artwork. You are invited to bring a work of art and describe the intent of your artwork to the group. The group is then asked to offer constructive feedback. Participating in a critique will help you gain confidence and focus in your work. The workshop will also address questions related to the critique process including: What is a critique? What do I do with the feedback I am given? Am I ready to accept a critique? Who do I ask for a critique? How do I critique the work of others? Enrollment limited to 30; ages 18 and up

Passionate Painting [WORKSHOP]
Instructor: Michele Combs

Do you want to work loosely with more paint and more confidence? This class is for you. In this workshop we will strip away the time we use to overthink our paintings and explore the valuable lessons learned by focusing our attention for short periods of time. You will create three to four 6" x 8" pochades working from life, pictures and/or your imagination. The goal is to paint expressively and quickly. Bring in pictures or objects you would like to paint and all your supplies. The instructor will take you through the steps. This is challenging, but fun. Request a materials list when you register. Illustrating Your Family Journal [WORKSHOP]

Learn to use photos, collage and illustrations to create a personalized record of travels, memories or important events from your family's life. This workshop will show you how to create your own drawings and combine them with memorabilia and photographs to truly capture an experience, much like an artist might journal in their sketchbook. Yarn Painting [WORKSHOP]
Instructor: Traudi Bestler

This class is for weavers and knitters who would like to color their own yarns. Spend some time creating your own color ways to create a custom knitted or woven item. We will use Fiber Reactive dyes to paint yarns such as cotton, bamboo, tencel, rayon and silk. No previous dyeing experience is needed to enjoy this class. Students can consult with the instructor for guidance concerning the selection and purchase of their yarns before the workshop. Wear old clothes or bring an apron and protective gloves. Dyes and dye chemicals are included. Enrollment limited to 8; ages 16 and up

Natural Plant Dyes [WORKSHOP]
Instructor: Karen Rognsvoog

In this workshop, students will gather their own plant materials and learn how to prepare dye baths to extract colors for use in dyeing textiles. We will also learn the process of using mordants, which set the color to prevent fading, open up the fibers to accept dye, and determine the final color. We will dye wool yarn, silk scarves, and cotton fabrics. Also covered will be how to grow dye plants, pruning tips, and harvesting and storing plant materials for future use.

Mixed Media Sculpture [WORKSHOP]
Instructor: Patty Carmody Smith

This is a great workshop for students interested in mixed media and surface design. Learn how to carve an armature out of styrofoam and cover it with papier mache pulp. Then build up the surface with air drying clay and paint. Basic materials included. Found and personal objects can be easily incorporated. Please bring some to the workshop along with ideas for a small sculpture.

Rattan Handles and Embellishments [WORKSHOP]
Instructor: Andy Juelich
Skill Level: All [WORKSHOP]
This workshop is designed for both new and continuing students who would like to learn how to use rattan for making handles and embellishments on pottery. Handles can be created on teapots, mugs, pitchers, and platters. These handles are not only functional, but allow the artist to create visual movement and to play with negative space to unify a piece. In the first hour, the instructor will demonstrate how to connect, join and build rattan handles. During the remaining time, students will work on their own piece with the instructor's guidance. At the end of the workshop, students will be able to build, dye, varnish and complete their own project. Note: students should bring a piece of their own work (pottery, wood, metal, or...) to the workshop. Enrollment limited to 20; ages 16 and up

Leatherwork & Knotting [WORKSHOP]
Instructor: Andy Juelich
Skill Level: All
Learn to create unique belts, necklaces, bracelets and other useful items through the medium of knotted leather. Students will learn basic marling-spike knotting, braiding, and applique, as well as how to dye leather. The instructor will provide demonstrations and individual guidance to take students through this traditional, sophisticated process. By the end of the workshop, you will take home a finished piece and understand several versatile techniques for knotting and working with leather. Enrollment limited to 10; ages 18 and up

Traudi Bestler
Traudi trained at the Weavers Guild of Minnesota, the Weaving School and Sievers School of Fiber Arts. She has been a teacher of weaving, dyeing and fiber arts for 20 years In addition, she has been a workshop presenter at the annual Minnesota Weaving Federation and travels to schools around the country.
Jerry Calengor
B.S., University of Minnesota, Duluth. Jerry has worked as a gallery owner and studio painter for over forty years. His award-winning work has been exhibited throughout the Midwest, including a solo exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Jerry painted for a year in Barbizon, France, home of the impressionists. www.calengorstudio.com
Patty Carmody Smith
Patty has a B.S. in Art from the University of Wisconsin at River Falls. She has shown her fiber and mixed media sculpture regionally since 1995. Patty has a passion for the creative process and the role it plays in living a creative life. She has developed a unique sculptural technique that utilizes lightweight air-drying materials.
Michele Combs
Trained in classical realism at the Minnesota River School of Fine Art, and has studied with nationally recognized artists throughout the United States. Michele prefers to paint from life as it is the best way to capture subtle beauty. She has been teaching since 2005. www.michelecombs.com
Suzanne Galloway
B.A., Studio Art and Art History, DePauw University with additional coursework from the University of Minnesota, and MCAD; she has also studied with Barbara Nechis, John Salminen, Cheng Khee Chee, and Stephen Quiller, Her watercolors and drawings have been exhibited in multiple local, regional and national juried competitions and she has won several awards for her work. She returns to the Art Center as an instructor with over 10 years of teaching experience.
Gail Katz-James
M.F.A., Textile Arts at the University of California-Davis. Gail is an artist who works primarily with found objects and hardware to construct wall sculptures. She has experience as an art juror, and is a representative for Minnesota to the Surface Design Association. Most recently her quilt-inspired wall piece was selected for permanent display at the Minneapolis Children’s Hospital.
Britt Howe
Britt is an illustrator / sequential artist living in Plymouth, Minnesota. She received her B.F.A. in Sequential Art at The Savannah College of Art and Design, and thrives on illustrating comics and books involving animals, adventure and fantasy.
Andy Juelich
B.A., in Studio Arts from St. John’s University. Andy apprenticed under, and now collaborates with, potter Richard Bresnahan. Andy’s large vases are coiled and thrown over several days, allowing for carving and atmospheric records from soda-firing. He teaches clay, sculpture, and book-arts for the Art Center. www.andyjuelich.com
Georgia Kandiko
Georgia has studied under such notable watercolor artists as Cheng-Khee Chee, John Salminen, and Steven Quiller. A popular and experienced instructor, Georgia has taught watercolor at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum as well as other local venues. She is an active exhibitor of her own work, and has attained Signature Status with the Minnesota Watercolor Society.
Jon Monson
AIA owner of Landschute, the Excelsior-based design/build firm, has worked in the architectural profession for over thirty years. He has helped revitalize the “master builder” approach to building by founding one of the area’s first, architect led, design/build firms in 1980. Since moving to the Lake area over twenty years ago, Mr. Monson has focused his attention on projects which have a specific connection to The Lake, including numerous historic renovations of both residential and commercial buildings. Mr. Monson has most recently undertaken the renovation of the 1892, T.B. Janney residence in Cottagewood.
Lee Persell
University of Minnesota. Lee is the ceramics Studio Manager for the Minnetonka Center for the Arts. She exhibits in shows and galleries in the Midwest. She has extensive experience in ceramics and design consulting, and has taught at the Art Center since the mid-1990s
Jodi Reeb-Myers
B.F.A., Minneapolis College of Art & Design. Jodi has been creating art for over 25 years. As the recipient of numerous awards, her work has been widely exhibited, and may be found in many private and corporate collections both locally and nationally. An experienced and talented teacher, Jodi taught printmaking at MCAD for over nine years, and has also taught at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts, Edina Art Center, Duluth Art Institute and MCAD Studio kids. Jodi creates her mixed media paintings at her studio in the Traffic Zone Center for Visual Art in Minneapolis.
Karen Rognsvoog
B.A., University of Minnesota, in Studio Arts and Child Development. Karen was a student of Malcom Myers, and has studied Sumi-e for the past ten years with Reiko Ito Shellum. She has been dyeing natural fibers and growing plants for dye since the mid-1970s, and has taught extensively in schools and community centers around the Twin Cities, as well as at the North House Folk School in Grand Marais. Always on the lookout for new and interesting dye stuffs, don’t follow her closely on the road, since Karen “brakes for roadside weeds!”
Marcelo Valdes
AIA, has more than 20 years experience as a residential architect in the United States, Europe and Uruguay, his native land. He has a degree in architecture (University de la Republica, Uruguay), a post-graduate diploma in housing studies (HIS, Netherlands) and a master’s in architecture from the University of Minnesota. A registered architect in MN, he worked for ten years for SALA Architects before starting his own firm, M. Valdes Architects PLLC in St. Paul. His work has won several awards and has been published in books and magazines including Architecture MN, Pioneer Press, Minneapolis-St. Paul Magazine, Family Handyman and the upcoming book “Breaking Ground” by Jeremiah Eck. Marcelo is an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Minnesota. His classes are centered on his passion to illustrate the value of residential design to a broad audience. www.mvaldesarc.com
Pamela Vazquez
Pamela has worked in the field of Architecture for over 20 years. She worked for a prominent local architecture firm as their Senior Designer from 1999-2009. She recently has taken on the challenge of starting her own business “The New Studio” in Woodland, Minnesota. Her professional passion extends to all aspects of residential design from the interior to the exterior. She has dedicated herself to learning her craft and has surrounded herself with mentors that have handed down their expertise within the profession. She has been highlighted in This Old House Magazine and has continued to seek out clients that are as passionate as she is about the field of residential design.
Michon Weeks
M.F.A., Painting & Drawing, University of Minnesota, B.A., Art & Design, Iowa State University. Michon is a versatile and talented instructor with experience teaching as an Adjunct instructor at the College of St. Benedict and Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall. She recently completed a series of 20 etched glass drawings in windows for the Marshall-Lyon County Library. Her logo design “Stingray” was also recently featured on pint glasses sold exclusively at the Walker Art Center Shop.
