IMPORTANT NOTE:
Did you notice a change in the fee for your class? To simplify our accounting and recordkeeping, we no longer charge separate studio and materials fees. The total price for your class did not increase but it might look like it did. In fact, the class will actually cost less if you are a member since we are now discounting the studio and materials fees in addition to the tuition discount. We will continue to charge the model fees separately.

STONE CARVING FOR KIDS: AGES 10-14

Learn the techniques of a stone sculptor by carving, filing, and sanding limestone blocks into artistic images. These art pieces will last a lifetime.

Learning to draw is learning to see! Develop basic drawing skills – line quality, surface texture and shading techniques will all be covered. Personal expression will be emphasized. Bring a 14" x 17" sketchbook, 2B drawing pencils and a pink pearl eraser to the first class meeting.

TEEN ACRYLIC PAINTING: TEENS AGES 13-17

Acrylic paint is one of the most versatile mediums to use. This class will introduce techniques one can use to build color and aesthetic in their paintings. We will discuss how collage can add texture and affect the concept in a painting. We will cover various glazing techniques and acquire skills that help enhance your paintings giving them depth, luminosity, and richness.

Explore the world of black and white photography as you gain mastery of your camera, film, printing and expression. Whether you’re a serious photographer or just want to have fun, this is the place. Requirements: a manually capable 35mm camera. Students supply film and paper. Bring camera and one roll of Kodak Tri-X black and white film to first class.

TEEN GLASS FUSING: AGES 13-17
Instructor: Christopher Kelly

This class will explore the basic techniques of fused glass art. Students will create small scale projects like jewelry, tiles and bowls that utilize basic glass cutting techniques, color composition and design concepts. Projects will be kiln fired so some may need to be picked-up 2-3 weeks after the last class meeting date.

METAL SCULPTURE & WELDING: AGES 13-17
Instructor: Jeffrey Lohaus
Skill Level: All

Students will get an introduction to the techniques of turning sheet metal into 3D works of art. Students will learn how to: make patterns and form jigs; use the cutting torch and shears to cut shapes; solder and braze; weld metal: and bend and form metal to create compound shapes. Students should expect to develop a familiarity with basic safety rules, use of tools, different metal properties and how to work with sheet metal. NOTE: Sculpture room dress code: Full-length cotton jeans, long-sleeve cotton / flannel shirt, close-toed tennis shoes or leather boots.

TEEN DRAWING FUNDAMENTALS: AGES 13-17
Instructor: Britt Howe

This class will introduce students to various black and white drawing materials. Class assignments will consist of technical and skill building exercises as well as different ways of getting started on drawing. Most of the assignments will focus on still life observation and learning how to use line, shape, and shadow to build an interesting and dynamic composition. Perspective will also be covered. Students need to bring a 14" x 17" sketchbook to the first class meeting.

This is an all-skill-levels clay class where students have the opportunity to explore a variety of creating and finishing techniques. Class will involve demonstrations and instruction of the potter’s wheel, slab roller and extruder. Work can be high fired or raku fired.

SEQUENTIAL ART & ILLUSTRATION: AGES 13-17

In this course students will learn how illustration is all around us as an art form. From the designs that we wear on t-shirts, the covers of the books we read, the logos and brand identities we buy, and the image on the bottom of the skateboard deck we ride – illustration is everywhere! Students will be introduced to the process of product design from start to finish, creating their own brand identities, images and illustrations. This is a great class for students interested in developing their art skills in numerous mediums and learning how they can make creating art a career.

Students will use their imaginations to create new fashion designs by deconstructing and re-designing old garments, accessories and found objects. They will learn basic hand sewing , machine sewing and surface design techniques for two projects that push the limits of ordinary fashion.

TEEN SCREEN: AGES 13-17
Instructor: Elspeth Carlstrom
Skill Level: All

Have you ever wanted to design and print your own T-shirts, posters, or pieces of art? In this class students will learn the basics of screen printing on both fabric and paper. From design to finished product, student will plan their ideas, map out color separations and layering techniques, and master stencil and hand drawn techniques. Water-based inks will be used to create these multi-color masterpieces.

Teen Faculty

Elspeth Carlstrom
Elspeth received her Bachelor of Fine Art in painting from Minnesota State University, Mankato. She is a practicing artist whose work focuses on printmaking, collage and mixed-media art. Elspeth exhibits her work around the state.

Risë Ferster
B.A., Empire State College, M.F.A., SUNY College at New Paltz, and the Maine Photographic Workshops. Risë has been an Artist-in-Residence in the Minneapolis Public Schools and recipient of a Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowship.

Brittany Howe
Brittany is an illustrator / sequential artist living in Plymouth, Minnesota. She received her B.F.A. in Sequential Art at The Savannah College of Art and Design, and thrives on illustrating comics and books involving animals, adventure and fantasy.

Christopher Kelly
Studio Artist; Owner FK Art Glass; Teaching Assistant / Studio Tech ARCC Glass Department 1996–1999; Nationally Juried Artist 1999–2002; Commission Work 2003–Present. Teaches Classes in Glass Blowing, Fusing, and Equipment Design & Building.

Jeff Lohaus
Jeff is a mid-career artist living and working in Northeast Minneapolis. He is a painter and sculptor, and maintains a studio in the Northrup King Building. Jeff is primarily a metalworker and creates sculpture that is both fabricated and cast in sizes up to larger than life. He has extensive experience casting in the University of Minnesota foundry.

Ernest L. Miller Jr.
B.A. in Three-Dimensional Studio Art, Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, IL. A ceramicist and sculptor, he has extensive experience teaching adults and children in Minnesota and Illinois. An exhibitor and award winner in many juried shows, his work is widely collected.

Dorothy Odland
M.F.A. and B.F.A., University of Minnesota. Exhibitor, award winner and show juror. Gallery lecturer for 22 years at Walker Art Center. Founding member and mentor with W.A.R.M. (Women’s Art Registry of Minnesota). Her work is in many corporate and private collections.

Frank Picos
Associate in Applied Science degree in Construction Technology, New York City Community College. Part-time artist, teaching assistant and student with focus on stone carving and bronze casting. Member of Society of Minnesota Sculptors.
