STONE CARVING FOR KIDS: Kids & Teens 10-16

Learn the techniques of a stone sculptor by carving, filing, and sanding limestone blocks into artistic images. These art pieces will last a lifetime. Enrollment limited to 10; ages 10 - 14

Learning to draw is learning to see! Develop basic drawing skills – line quality, surface texture and shading techniques will all be covered. Personal expression will be emphasized. Bring a 14” x 17” sketchbook, 2B drawing pencils and a pink pearl eraser to the first class meeting.

Teen Acrylic Painting: Ages 13-17
Instructor: Charlotte Ruth Mason
Skill Level: All

Acrylic paint is one of the most versatile mediums to use. This class will introduce techniques one can use to build color and aesthetic in their paintings. We will discuss how collage can add texture and affect the concept in a painting. We will cover various glazing techniques and acquire skills that help enhance your paintings giving them depth, luminosity, and richness. Enrollment limited to 16; ages 13 - 17

Teen Drawing Fundamentals: Ages 13-17
Instructor: Art Center Faculty
Skill Level: All

This class will introduce students to various black and white drawing materials. Class assignments will consist of technical and skill building exercises as well as different ways of getting started on drawing. Most of the assignments will focus on still life observation and learning how to use line, shape, and shadow to build an interesting and dynamic composition. Perspective will also be covered. Students need to bring a 14” x 17” sketchbook to the first class meeting. Enrollment limited to 16; ages 13 - 17

Teen Welding: Ages 13 - 17
Instructor: Art Center Faculty
Skill Level: All

Come experience welding as a foundation for sculpture. Students will learn the basics of welding and metalwork while incorporating the human figure into a sculpture with feeling and movement. No experience necessary, girls and boys are all welcome. Enrollment limited to 10; ages 13 - 17

Welding dress code: Long sleeve shirt and long pants. (Cotton or wool only – no synthetic fibers). Closed toe shoes, leather preferred. No sandals, flip flops, etc. Gloves, eye protection and dust masks provided.

This is an all levels class where students have the opportunity to explore a variety of creating and finishing techniques. Class will involve demonstrations and instruction of the potter’s wheel, slab roller and extruder. Work can be high fired or raku fired. Enrollment limited to 16; ages 13 - 17

Instructor: Risë Ferster
Skill Level: All

Bring camera, your camera's manual, and one roll of Kodak Tri-X film to the first class. Explore the world of black and white photography as you gain mastery of your camera, film processing, printing and expression. Whether you're a serious photographer or just want to have fun, this is the class for you. Requirements: a manually capable 35mm camera. Students supply film and paper. Enrollment limited to 8; ages 13 - 17

Faculty:

Charlotte Ruth Mason
B.F.A., Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Also, studied Theatre Arts at Children?fs Theatre in Minneapolis. Daughter of a painter and writer, Ruth studied performance art, graphic design and video production. She worked in film and television production for 15 years as producer, writer, camera and audio technician. She has created large scale public work for plays, performances and installations. She loves working with musicians, children and teens on projects large and small. Ruth is a big fan of public art making: murals, films, sculptures and spontaneous artworks.

Dorothy Odland
M.F.A. and B.F.A., University of Minnesota. Exhibitor, award winner and show juror. Gallery lecturer for 22 years at Walker Art Center. Founding member and mentor with W.A.R.M. (Women’s Art Registry of Minnesota). Her work is in many corporate and private collections.

Risë Ferster
B.A., Empire State College, M.F.A., SUNY College at New Paltz, and the Maine Photographic Workshops. Risë has been an Artist-in-Residence in the Minneapolis Public Schools and recipient of a Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowship.

Ernest L. Miller, Jr.
B.A. in Three-Dimensional Studio Art, Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, IL. A ceramicist and sculptor, Ernest has extensive experience teaching adults and children in Minnesota and Illinois. Frank Picos
Associate in Applied Science degree in Construction Technology, New York City Community College. Part-time artist, teaching assistant, sculpture studio assistant and student with focus on stone carving and bronze casting. Member of Society of Minnesota Sculptors.
