In fact, the class will actually cost less if you are a member since we are now discounting the studio and materials fees in addition to the tuition discount. BEGINNING SCULPTURE IN METAL
Instructor: Carey Netherton
Skill Level: B

The purpose of this class is to introduce students to basic welding and metalworking methods associated with the construction of sculptural objects. A large portion of the class will focus on oxyacetylene welding, cutting and brazing, but cold working methods, such as grinding and drilling, will also be demonstrated. Safety and proper tool usage will be emphasized. Welding dress code: Long sleeve shirt and long pants. (Cotton or wool only – no synthetic fibers). Closed toe shoes, leather preferred. No sandals, flip flops, etc. Gloves, eye protection and dust masks provided.

SCULPTURE IN METAL: INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED
Instructor: Carey Netherton

This course is designed for those individuals who already have basic welding/metalworking experience but wish to develop their skills further. Techniques such as arc welding, MIG welding, TIG welding, as well as forging will be demonstrated. Students will be exposed to a variety of cold working methods also. Design principles will be emphasized and students will be encouraged to develop their own sculptural projects. Welding dress code: Long sleeve shirt and long pants. (Cotton or wool only – no synthetic fibers). Closed toe shoes, leather preferred. No sandals, flip flops, etc. Gloves, eye protection and dust masks provided.

FORM WITH FUNCTION: USEFUL OBJECTS IN METAL

Would you like an ornamental lantern for your backyard? A custom jewelry box? Perhaps a one-of-a-kind spatula for your grill or an artful fireplace set? In this course students will learn how to use welding, forging and other metal working methods to make small to medium sized functional objects. Safety and proper tool usage will be emphasized. ANIMALS IN WELDED STEEL
Instructor: Judd Nelson
Skill Level: All
Spend Saturday mornings in the sculpture studio creating welded steel animal sculptures for your home and garden. After researching the animal of your choosing, you will learn to sketch and then weld a small creature. Capture the gesture and spirit of the animal with the way you work the metal by cutting, melting, forging and hammering. The sculptures will be given a patina and mounted for display. welding dress code: Long sleeve shirt and long pants. (Cotton or wool only – no synthetic fibers). Closed toe shoes, leather preferred. BEGINNING / INTERMEDIATE STONE CARVING
Instructor: Susan Lyman

Beginner students: This class is for you! Using hand tools and working small in limestone, beginning students will be introduced to the carving process. Basic three-dimensional design will be discussed as it applies to individual projects, with additional focus on the figure as subject matter. Intermediate students will hone their understanding of the reductive process and sculptural design and be introduced to power tools. Some tools provided. Student purchases stone. Instructor will provide supply list.

This course is tailored to meet individual needs. Each student is assisted in realizing his or her unique creation from conception to a completed bronze. We begin with learning to create a sculpture in clay or wax. You then learn to pull a mold (if necessary), invest the wax for bronze casting, chase the metal, patina and mount the piece to complete it. Some tools and materials provided. Casting materials are purchased per project.

PERSONAL ICONS / SACRED FIGURES
Instructor: Patty Carmody Smith
Skill Level: All

In this two day class you will create a freestanding personal icon that reflects your divine essence. On the first day carve your armature from Styrofoam and cover it in papier mache. On the second day multiple techniques will be demonstrated on how to create a beautiful, textured surface using Paperclay, textured fabric and paint. You can use face molds that will be provided or create your own face. Finished pieces will measure 15-17 inches high.

FIGURATIVE SCULPTURE
Instructor: Foster Willey
Skill Level: All

This class will focus on figurative sculpture and traditional sculpting techniques. The session will emphasize working from the model to create full figure studies (nude) or portraits. Special attention will be given to the additive process of clay modeling and thinking in the round. Work will range from an extended pose to quick studies in terra cotta. The process of bronze casting using the lost wax method and standard investment will also be taught. Mold making and casting will be discussed and demonstrated on a per project basis. Some tools and materials provided. Bronze casting materials will be charged on a per project basis. Model fee is required unless other arrangements are made in advance with the instructor. Some firing fees may apply.

Investment casting materials are purchased at the time of casting.

NEW ALTERNATIVES TO CAST BRONZE SCULPTURE
Instructor: John Currie
Skill Level: All [Workshop]

This course is designed to introduce students to a fast, direct-sculpting alternative to traditional cast bronze sculpting. We will work in Magic Sculpt two-part epoxy clay and proprietary Sculpt Nouveau metal coatings, plus cold patinas, to quickly create lightweight sculptures that look like cast bronze or iron. Each student will be equipped with techniques and materials to create a sculpture and to do further work outside of the Art Center. They will learn how to create a sculpture directly in patina, and how to apply a permanent protective finish. Tools and materials are provided. Information on how and where to purchase additional materials will be provided so that they can continue to work in this medium after the workshop.

SCULPTURE FACULTY

John Currie
John is a graphic and concept designer, creating restaurants, package graphics, surface textile design, corporate IDs, collateral, publications and books for clients in the US and Europe. He studied Fine Art at the University of Minnesota (the Bad Art classes were full), followed by sculpting classes at the Art Center with Nick Legeros, Roger Junk and Heidi Hoy. He studied studio painting with Clea Fehlein, finger painting with his nieces and plein air painting with Armond Cabrera and his mentor, Reid Galey. With Reid, he was one of the founding members of Outdoor Painters of Minnesota, being
colorful while saving electricity. He is a member of Society of Minnesota Sculptors, National Sculpture Society and AAA, and has been a Sculpture Studio Assistant at the Art Center. His work has been in juried shows and fairs in the US and is exhibited in galleries, plus private collections in France, Belgium, Peru and the US. More can be found in the closet in his studio.

Heidi Hoy
B.A., Studio Arts, Hamline University. Heidi began taking sculpture classes at the Art Center in 1988, and taught from 1995-2002, and returned in 2008. She has exhibited her work in galleries and museums nationally and has created many public works. Her work reflects her love of the female form in dramatic poses.

Susan Lyman
B.A., University of Minnesota, majored in Studio Art, Sociology and Anthropology. Susan has worked as an art director in major advertising agencies. She has been involved with the Art Center for the past 15 years as a student and as an instructor. Her own work in sculpture is primarily figurative and often life size. In teaching she enjoys nurturing students to develop their skills in stone sculpting.

Judd Nelson
Judd has been creating welded and forged animal sculptures since he was 17. He completed his formal training in art at the University of Minnesota were he was taught sculpture and bonze casting from some of the most widely recognized Midwest instructors. He has taught at the Minneapolis Institute of Art as well as in Native American and public schools around the country. He has been on “Hometime,” a National Public Television show as a set builder and technical advisor as well as in front of the camera. His studio was featured in a recent “Hometime” episode.

Carey Netherton
M.F.A., in Sculpture, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. He holds a B.A., in 3-D Studio Art and Philosophy, Eastern Illinois University. Carey worked for over four years as a fine art foundry technician and supervisor at the Johnson Atelier Technical Institute of Sculpture in Mercerville, New Jersey. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions, has won a variety of awards and is a part of many private collections.

Foster Willey Jr.
B.F.A., Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI, the Naguib School of Sculpture. Earns commissions and exhibits works in stone, bronze, concrete, wood and steel.

Arlene Zimmerman
began taking sculpture classes at the Art Center in 1993 where she studied until 2002. She was a teaching assistant from 1995-2002. She has exhibited her work in galleries and at the Museum of American Art. The uniqueness of being a woman permeates her work. Her sculptural figures celebrate ethnicity.
