WEEK ONE CLASSES June 11 - 15:
Woodcarving
Five 1/2-days, Monday-Friday, June 11-15

Students will learn basic to intermediate processes and techniques used in woodcarving. Discussions and demonstrations will cover first aid, safety, appropriate wood types, wood preparation, hand tool use, equipment use and project instructions. Some projects will take multiple days to finish. Enrollment limited to 12, ages 13-17

Character Design for Animation

In this class students will learn how to design characters for use in comics, illustration and animation projects. We will discuss what makes a “good” character, different reference materials used to help support character design, and the various artistic ways that you can render your characters. Drawing, painting and sculpting (creating small maquettes with Model Magic) will all be covered in this class. Enrollment limited to 12, ages 13-17

Glass Fusing
Five 1/2-days, Monday-Friday, June 18-22

This class will explore the basic techniques of fused glass art. Students will create small scale projects like jewelry and tiles that utilize basic glass cutting techniques, color, composition, and design concepts. Projects will be kiln fired so some may need to be picked up three weeks after the last class meeting date. Projects not picked up by Sept. 28 will be recycled. Enrollment limited to 12, ages 13-17

Aerosol & Graffiti Arts

Students will explore the various artists and styles of aerosol and graffiti arts including examples from New York subways, Tokyo, and Europe. We will combine hand brush work with aerosol techniques including stencils, block-outs and fades. Where and where NOT to do graffiti will be discussed as we develop our tastes and personal expression while creating 2- and 3-dimensional art pieces. Safety with aerosols will also be covered.

Encaustic Painting

Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The pigmented wax is then painted onto a support, usually panel or wood. Students will learn a brief history and description of the various processes and techniques used in encaustic painting. Basic supplies, tools, safety, preparation of supports, application of grounds, fusing techniques and paint application will all be covered. Please dress for mess. Enrollment limited to 16, ages 13-17

Fantasy & Science Fiction Illustration

This class will explore the genre of fantasy and science fiction illustration. Students will look at age appropriate examples of contemporary fantasy and sci-fi illustrators and use them as inspiration for their own imaginative environments, worlds, creatures and characters. Basic drawing and illustration techniques will be covered and numerous drawing and painting materials used. Projects will consist of thumbnail sketches, layout designs, character development and a finished illustrated broadside. Enrollment limited to 12, ages 13-17

Ceramic Portrait Busts
Four 1/2-days, Monday-Friday, July 2-6

Students will learn how to construct and sculpt a traditional ceramic bust portrait using low-fire red clay. Building the support, layering clay and developing realistic and accurate facial features through traditional sculpting tools and techniques will be taught. Portraits will be bisque fired only and not glazed. Due to the nature of the bisque and glaze firing process, projects will need to be picked up 3 weeks after the last class day. Projects not picked up by Friday, Sept 28 will be recycled. Enrollment limited to 16, ages 13-17

Abstract Painting

This class will look at a variety of abstract artists creating in both past and contemporary times. We will discuss their styles, techniques, processes and artistic influences. Using this information we will create a series of abstract paintings that will have a push and pull between line, color, form, texture, and rhythm among other basic visual elements. Basic to intermediate painting techniques, surface modification, composition, and surface development will be taught. Enrollment limited to 16, ages 13-17

Black & White Photography
Five 1/2-days, Monday-Friday, July 9-13

Students must provide their own 35mm SLR camera, B/W35mm film, and photographic paper. A materials list will be available from the front desk. This black and white photo class will introduce students to the camera and the darkroom. Class assignments, examples and discussion will provide the backdrop for instruction on techniques and processes. More advanced students will have the opportunity to experiment with composition and developing techniques. Enrollment limited to 12, ages 13-17

Metal Sculpture

Students will get an introduction to the techniques of turning mild sheet metal (copper) into 3D works of art. We will learn how to: make patterns and form jigs; use the cutting torch and shears to cut shapes; solder and braze; and bend and form metal to create compound shapes. We will develop a familiarity with basic safety rules, use of tools, different metal properties and how to work with copper sheet metal. Students will complete a kinetic metal sculpture by the end of class. Enrollment limited to 12, ages 13-17

Comic Book Design
Five 1/2-days, Monday-Friday, July 16-20

Students will look at and discuss various contemporary comic artists to gain an understanding of their styles, inspirations and techniques. Using a basic fable as a starting point for our comic storyline, students will develop their own hero, villain and side kick characters. We will then use our characters and storyline to design the layout of our narrative and comic images. Students will use various dry and wet media to illustrate their comic book pages and ultimately bind them into a finished color format. Enrollment limited to 16, ages 13-17

Leatherworking & Knotting

Students will learn to create unique necklaces, bracelets and other useful items through the medium of knotted leather. Demonstrations on basic knotting, braiding, and appliqué techniques will be taught as well as how to dye leather. By the end of the class students will have a couple finished wearable leather pieces and an understanding of how to work with leather. Enrollment limited to 16, ages 13-17

Glass Fusing

Students will learn the process of illustrating a short fable. Thumbnail sketches, character design, layout, final inking, coloration and the binding process will all be covered. Students will complete 3-4 illustrations in a 5-6 page book using various drawing and painting media including graphite, pen & ink, colored pencils, markers, and watercolor. Enrollment limited to 16, ages 13-17

Metal Jewelry

Students will get an introduction to the basic safety, rules, tools, equipment, processes, and techniques used in metal jewelry making. We will use copper sheets, wire, and precut shapes to create jewelry that incorporates the techniques of cutting, soldering, and simple fabrication. Gas torches will be used so long sleeve cotton shirts, pants and closed toe shoes will need to be worn in class.

Handmade Handbags

Students will design and create a two different fabric hand bags: a handheld clutch and a shoulder bag. We will view and discuss various designs and styles of hand bags. Then we will sketch out and design our own versions, make patterns, and choose fabrics. Bags will incorporate both machine and hand sewing techniques. By the end of class each student will have two functional and fashionable hand bags. Enrollment limited to 16, ages 13-17

Anime / Manga Illustration

Are you interested in the genre of manga / anime comics? In this workshop teens will work with comic artist on developing and refining their anime drawing skills. Teens will look at various manga and anime drawing styles and then practice character and concept development, composition, drawing, inking and coloring your choice of these styles. Painting with Acrylics

Students will learn basic to intermediate painting techniques for working with acrylics. Composition, building layers, and creating depth will be covered. Color, value, shading and perspective are also some of the fun basic skills you will learn to form a good foundation. Paintings will be created on paper and canvas board. Batik & Surface Dyeing

Come create an amazing and vibrant art piece while learning about fiber modification techniques. Students will learn how to dye, print, bleach and otherwise modify fabrics to create their own unique designs with colorful patterns and images. Then we will transform them into sewn 2-dimensional pieces of art. This class is like painting with fabric!

Learn to Knit
Five 1/2-days, Monday-Friday, August 20-24

Knitting is based on two stitches- knit and purl. We will learn them both, as well as how to cast on and bind off. We will use these core skills to make a pocket purse and several sample squares. You will complete this class feeling comfortable with knitting. Class tuition provides #8 knitting needles and 200 yards worsted weight wool.

Sculpture Techniques

In this class students will learn basic sculpture techniques and have the opportunity to experiment with various mediums. Wire, platter wrap, wood, foam core, and fabric will all be used to create abstract and realistic, hard and soft sculptures. Images of famous historical art pieces will be shown for inspiration and instruction. Enrollment limited to 16, ages 13-17
