Comic Arts: Non-Traditional Drawing Techniques

This course will explore the wide range of media used to create comics including; watercolor, India ink, scratchboard, colored pencil and collage. We will look at and draw different styles of comics, explore how different media change the mood within stories, practice layout and design principals and improve our drawing skills. No previous drawing or comics experience necessary. Class price includes all materials. Enrollment limited to 16; ages 13 - 17

Drawing & Illustration Techniques
Instructor: Art Center Faculty
Skill Level: All [Teens only at Ridgedale]

In this class we will improve our drawing skills while learning the process of illustrating a story from start to finish. Students will either write their own story or use a pre-published work for inspiration (poems, short stories, music lyrics, etc.) We will design the page layout, create rough sketches of characters and images and then use our sketches to create final drawings. We will finish class with a series of illustrations that can be bound and finished. Students will choose what media they will use to create their illustrations. No previous drawing experience necessary. Class price includes all materials. Enrollment limited to 16; ages 13 - 17

Teen Fashion Design
Instructor: Art Center Faculty
Skill Level: All [Teens only at Ridgedale]

Students will need to bring clothing to modify to the first class meeting. In this class we will create new fashion designs by deconstructing old garments, up-cycling found materials and modifying fabrics and clothing into entirely “new” designs. Basic sewing, appliqué, fabric modification and surface design techniques will be taught for the creation of two-three projects that push the limits of ordinary fashion. Basic to intermediate fashion design techniques will be demonstrated and ample time for personal exploration and one-to-one instruction available. Class fee includes some basic materials. Enrollment limited to 16; ages 13 - 17

Painting Techniques
Instructor: Art Center Faculty
Skill Level: All [Teens only at Ridgedale]

This course will provide a solid foundation for working with water-based paints and modifiers. Techniques covered will include; brush handling, textural effects, color mixing, glazing, collage, stenciling, additives, modifiers and pigment characteristics. Students will learn techniques on how to build color and aesthetic in their paintings while enhancing and giving them depth, luminosity, and richness. No previous painting experience necessary. Class price includes some materials.
