Drawing & Beyond: Kids Ages 5-7

Drawing skills are the foundation of nearly all other art forms. In this class we will start with simple skills lessons covering basic drawing techniques. Foundational elements like line, shape, value, texture and color will be discussed and used to build successful and finished drawings. How to draw portraits, landscapes, animals and abstract subjects will be covered. Graphite, colored pencils, markers and oil pastel drawing materials will be used in combination with mixed-media techniques. Enrollment limited to 16; ages 5 - 7

Painting Basics: Kids Ages 5-7
Instructor: Charlotte Ruth Mason

This class will introduce children to basic painting techniques in watercolor, tempera and acrylic. Class instruction will cover brush handling, blending, stenciling, stamping, wet-to-dry techniques, wet-on-wet techniques, collage and mixed-media techniques. Subject matter will include portraits, still life and abstract compositions. Various famous painters will be viewed and their techniques discussed and practiced. Enrollment limited to 16; ages 5 - 7

Ceramic Sculpture: Kids Ages 5-7
Instructor: Audra Smith

We will use basic pinch, coil and additive ceramic handbuilding techniques to create numerous clay projects including; pinch pot animals, garden tiles, decorative vases and a small garden pot. Projects will be made with low fire clay, painted with colorful slips and stains and glaze fired for finishing. Because of the bisque and glaze firing process, some projects will need to be picked up 2-3 weeks after the last meeting date. Enrollment limited to 16; ages 5 - 7

Learning to draw is learning to see! Develop basic drawing skills – line quality, surface texture and shading techniques will all be covered. Personal expression will be emphasized. Bring a 14" x 17" sketchbook, 2B drawing pencils and a pink pearl eraser to the first class meeting.

Cartoons, Caricatures & Comics: Kids Ages 8-12

Do you love to create cartoons, caricatures and comics? In this drawing class students will learn how to develop cartoon characters, write storylines and create cartoon strips and comic books. We will use watercolor, India ink, scratchboard, colored pencil and other media to create different styles, as well as explore how different materials change the mood within our stories. No previous comic experience necessary. Enrollment limited to 16; ages 8 - 12

In this class students will learn that woodcarving is more than just whittling. Woodcarving techniques, proper use of tools, and safety will all be demonstrated and discussed in class. Come learn a new art form and make something beautiful out of wood. Enrollment limited to 16; ages 8 - 12

This class will teach students specific painting techniques with watercolor, tempera and acrylic paints. Sanding, scraping, blending, dry-brushing, wet-on-wet washes, modifiers, collage techniques and multi-media painting techniques are skills that will be covered. Subject matter will consist of still lives, landscapes, portraits, animals and abstract images. Students will paint on paper and canvas board. No previous painting experience necessary. Youth Ceramics - Wheel & Hand: Kids Ages 8-12

In this class students will learn basic techniques for handbuilding and throwing clay on the potter’s wheel. Studio and equipment safety, throwing, handbuilding modifications, trimming, glazing and various finishing techniques will be covered throughout this course. All pieces will be glaze fired. Throwing Together Ages 8 to Adult

This is a great introductory class for people of all ages who want to learn about wheel thrown ceramics. It’s also a great way for adults and children to spend time together creating and collaborating. Students will learn to make basic cylinders, bowls, plates and more. Discussions on how to modify, embellish and glaze pots will also be covered. Participation in this class does not include the use of open studio time. Participants will need to purchase clay and firing fees in addition to the class fee. Bring a towel and dress for mess! NOTE: Children 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Enrollment limited to 16; ages 8 to adult

Andy Juelich
B.A., in Studio Arts from St. John’s University. Andy apprenticed under, and now collaborates with, potter Richard Bresnahan. Andy’s large vases are coiled and thrown over several days, allowing for carving and atmospheric records from soda-firing. He teaches clay, sculpture, and book-arts for the Art Center. www.andyjuelich.com
Charlotte Ruth Mason
B.F.A., Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Also, studied Theatre Arts at Children?fs Theatre in Minneapolis. Daughter of a painter and writer, Ruth studied performance art, graphic design and video production. She worked in film and television production for 15 years as producer, writer, camera and audio technician. She has created large scale public work for plays, performances and installations. She loves working with musicians, children and teens on projects large and small. Ruth is a big fan of public art making: murals, films, sculptures and spontaneous artworks.
Dorothy Odland
M.F.A. and B.F.A., University of Minnesota. Exhibitor, award winner and show juror. Gallery lecturer for 22 years at Walker Art Center. Founding member and mentor with W.A.R.M. (Women’s Art Registry of Minnesota). Her work is in many corporate and private collections.
Chris Singewald
B.F.A. with an emphasis in Studio Ceramics from the University of Northern Iowa in 2006, completed an apprenticeship with internationally recognized ceramic artist Chris Gustin in 2009, and received a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Artisanry from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth in 2010. Currently, Instructor and Resident Artist/Materials and Glaze Technician at the Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis.
