Minnetonka Center for the Arts Presents:

GIRL SCOUT “SPRING THING” ART EXPERIENCE

Girl Scouts and troop leaders – are you looking for interesting and engaging activities for your troop this spring? If so, our “Spring Thing” Art Experience is a great opportunity for Girl Scouts ages 5-15 to earn arts & crafts badges while learning about different art forms from skilled and talented Art Center faculty. Scouts spend the day or half-day with us and learn new visual arts skills, create great art to take home and meet other girls from around the area with similar talents and interests.

To allow for appropriate class preparation, please register girls for classes before Friday, April 16th

Payment is due upon registration. The Art Center accepts cash, checks and Visa, MasterCard and American Express.

Age Groups:

Group A: ages 5-7 (Daisy) (jump to Group A)

Group B: ages 7-10 (Brownie) (jump to Group B)

Group C: ages 10-15 (Junior / Cadett) (jump to Group C)

Lunch and snacks are NOT provided by the Art Center.
Students will take a 10-15 minute break during the 2.5 hour classes. Please bring a bag lunch for the lunch break.

Cost per person:

$25.00 per student for one AM or PM session

$40.00 per student for a combined AM & PM session

Cancellation, Class Changes, Refund Policy
• No refunds will be issued 0 - 7 days prior to the class start date.
• Students who withdraw 8 - 14 days prior to the class start date will receive a 50% refund and charged a $5 administrative fee per class.
• Students who withdraw 15 or more days prior to the class start date will receive a 100% refund and charged a $5 administrative fee per class.

Students may transfer from one class to another up to 14 days prior to the class start date with a $5 administrative fee per class.

In case of documented illness, students may transfer classes until the first day of class, subject to availability, with a $5 administrative fee per class. No refunds will be issued after the start of the class due to illness. The Art Center may request a Doctor’s note.

In the event the Art Center must cancel a session due to insufficient enrollment, a full refund will be issued. If we must cancel a session, we will notify parents before the class is scheduled to start. The Art Center reserves the right to cancel classes that do not have enrollment of six or more students. To assure that each student has a good learning experience, classes have a maximum number of 16 students per class.

Alphabet Soup

(AM Class 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM)

(This class satisfies the requirements for the “Alphabet Hike” activity)

Skill Level: ALL

Description:

In this class students will create and alphabet book. How you ask? By designing and decorating 26 different pages to accompany our 26 letters in the alphabet. Drawing, painting, printmaking and mixed-media process will be used for this fun, educational and fabulous mixed-media class. These pages will then be bound into a covered book for finishing.

Pop-Up Portraits

(AM Class 9:30 am – 12:00 pm)

(This class satisfies the requirements for the “Me in Paper” activity)

Skill Level: ALL

Description:

In this class students will make a 3-dimensional pop-up portrait painting of themselves using cardboard, tag board tissue paper, tempera paints and other arts and crafts materials. You’ve never seen a portrait quite like this!

Ceramic Lantern

(PM Class 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm)

(This class satisfies the Daisy requirements for the “Working with Clay” activity)

Skill Level: ALL

Description:

Light up your life (and your yard or deck) by creating a handmade ceramic lantern! Using basic handbuilding techniques and high-fire clay students will view examples of different lantern styles and then create their own. Because of the bisque and glaze firing process, some projects will need to be picked-up 2-3 weeks after the event (Pick-up date:Friday, March 26th).

Bugs, Birds & Butterflies

(PM Class 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm)

(This class satisfies the requirements for the “Tie-Dye Butterflies” activity)

Description:

Let’s look at all of the beautiful bugs, birds and butterflies back to visit us for the summer. Then we’ll create drawn, painted and collaged mixed-media 2- and 3-dimensional versions of our own to hang on the walls, from the ceiling and to crawl along the floor. We’ll appreciate our surroundings, learn about nature and have fun making great and unique art pieces.

Eco-Chic!

(AM Class 9:30am – 12:00pm)

(Brownies: this class satisfies 5 requirements for the Stitch it Together badge: #2, #3, #4, #5 and #6)

Skill Level: ALL

Description:
Open your eyes to the world of recycled items. In this class we’ll take our first steps into fashion design by creating custom accessories using sustainable or recycled fibers like; facial wipes, Mylar and Tyvex. We will learn how to change mundane, everyday items using paint, heat guns, and other fun techniques into useable, beautiful fiber objects you can wear or use in your art.

Music In Art

(AM Class 9:30am – 12:00pm)

(Brownies: this class satisfies 3 requirements for the Sounds of Music badge: #1, #4 and #5)

Skill Level: ALL

Description:

In this class students will use music as both inspiration and as subject matter. Music from around the world will be played and discussed during class. Then students will create their own musical instruments out of clay. A small drum body, maraca and wind chime are the possible projects that students will create. Because of the bisque firing process, all projects will need to be picked-up from the Art Center three weeks after the event (Pick-up date:Friday, March 26th).

Ceramic Garden Tower

(PM Class 1:00pm – 3:30pm)

(Brownies: this class satisfies 5 requirements for the Ceramics and Clay badge: #1, #2, #3, #4 and #5)

Skill Level: ALL

Description:

Add some fabulous architecture to your glorious summer gardens! In this ceramics class students will create a three tier Asian-style garden tower perfect to compliment to any indoor or outdoor landscape. Using basic slab, coil, and pinch ceramic techniques students will design and create stackable sections to be assembled in your garden (or wherever you see fit). Because of the bisque and glaze firing process, all projects will need to be picked-up from the Art Center three weeks after the event (Pick-up date:Friday, March 26th).

Building Art

(PM Class 1:00pm – 3:30pm)

(Brownies: this class satisfies 4 requirements for the Building Art badge: #1, #2, #3 and #6)

Skill Level: ALL

Description:

In this class students will discuss, design and draw different buildings that will house their favorite people and activities. Then using their designs as blueprints, they will create 3-dimensional mock-ups of their buildings using paper, tag board, card board, wood pieces and other arts and crafts materials.

Home Decor

(All-day AM and PM Class 9:30am – 3:30pm)

(Juniors: this class satisfies 5 requirements for the Art in the Home badge: #1, #3, #8, #9 and #10)

Skill Level: ALL

Description:

In this class students will look at and discuss various interior designers and their different styles. Students will use this information to design their own furniture, fabric samples, home décor accessories and room designs. This is a great introductory design class for students who may be interested in home decorationg.

Batik & Surface Dying

(AM Class 9:30am – 12:00pm)

(Juniors: this class satisfies 5 requirements for the Making Hobbies badge: #1, #3, #4, #5 and #6)

Skill Level: ALL

Description:

Come and discover that amazing process of batik dying! Batik is the process of using wax to systematically block-out areas as you layer fabrics with different color dyes to slowly build vibrant and colorful compositions. Students will learn how to wax and layer dyes to create amazing patterns and images on paper and muslin.

Art & Nature

(PM Class 1:00pm – 3:30pm)

(Juniors: this class satisfies 5 requirements for the Outdoor Creativity badge: #1, #2, #3, #4 and #10)

Skill Level: ALL

Description:

In this class students will look to nature for inspiration. We’ll start by looking at the work of famous artists and poets who use nature as their inspiration and subject matter. Then we will create paintings, prints, drawings and poems of our own. This is a great class for those who like to explore our natural surroundings and experiment with various art materials.
