ARTS OF THE HOLIDAYS
November 20 – December 23, 2008
Opening Reception, Thursday, Nov. 20, 6-9 PM
Laura H. Miles Gallery
Open to the public
The planning for the 2008 holiday sale is well underway. The search for new and unique handcrafted gifts and accessories has been going on for weeks – and this year promises to be bigger and better than before, with different artisans and great gift items. Enjoy the festivities of the opening reception and get first pick of the hundreds of handcrafted items. As usual, we will replenish the display areas as work sells.
We select work based on creativity, craftsmanship and value: Jewelry, ceramics, glass, multimedia, wood, sculpture, paintings, drawings, fiber, furniture, photos, cards and Holiday ornaments. We will have an amazing selection to choose from!

PLEASE REGISTER EARLY
We hate to cancel classes, and we know you dislike cancellation calls from the Art Center, but we need to make a decision about a week before a session begins as to whether to run a class or not. Unfortunately, we get several calls after a class has been cancelled, so please help us deliver better service by registering early to secure your space in a class.
Registrations will be accepted after a class has begun if space permits and with the permission of the instructor.
Tuition is not pro-rated for students who enroll late.
Registrations are date stamped and classes are filled on a first come, first serve basis, so call us or send your form in right away.

Altered Books
Instructor: Jean Stortz
Skill Level: All
Explore your life stories and transform them into an altered book! According to the International Society of Altered Book Arts (ISABA), an altered book is an “art form that used existing books that are transformed into works of art. The book becomes the canvas for the new ideas and images.” In this class, students will explore joining painting, drawing, sculpting, and printmaking with a variety of materials (postcards, photographs, newspaper articles, fabric swatches, and other memorabilia) when making their altered books. Together, these materials can be collaged, wired, sewn, or nailed to your altered book. Techniques introduced include collage, assemblage, image transfer, metal stamping, stamping with paint, and use of computer images. Students will create 2-3 altered books in this short session. Bring photos, memorabilia, and anything else you would like to incorporate. The instructor will also provide many materials.

Art with a Voice
Instructor: Melodee Strong
Skill Level: All
Want to say something with your art? In this course we will discuss how art can communicate ideas and opinions in many ways. More of a conceptual course, we will begin by discussing ways artists in history have used art to communicate thoughts about politics, activism, community and global issues. These discussions will be used as influences to create artwork collaboratively or individually. Working with multimedia materials and using design concepts, students will create artwork considering public display.
